Strategies for Survival and Pipeline Development in the Changing Healthcare Landscape
We are witnessing the transformation of the medical device and pharmaceutical industry before our eyes. In little over a year, we have seen the consolidation of multi-billion players Wyeth – Pfizer, Merck – Schering Plough, and Genentech – Roche. On the diversification front, Johnson & Johnson and Abbott have aggressively pursued new lines of business in the consumer health care and medical devices arena over the last few years. Diversification, consolidation, licensing, joint venture, capital raises and more – what are the growth and survival options available to various industry players and what does this indicate for the future landscape of health care? Furthermore, what effect has the economic downturn had on pipeline development and financing options for biotech and medical device companies? The panel will discuss these strategic questions from the perspective of large and small companies in the space as well as the venture capital community. Panelists will describe the potential implications of health care reform on medical innovation and the role that current medical challenges and market demand play in addressing pipeline development strategies.
