Chronic conditions will be some of the primary health care challenges of the 21st century. These conditions not only account for a majority of the deaths in the United States but also for the fastest-growing share of health care cost. They are also becoming a serious problem globally. This panel will discuss leading edge solutions to these 21st century health problems and consider what opportunities exist as these diseases grow in prevalence.

Steve Shortell, Dean, UC Berkeley School of Public Health
Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H., is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management and
Professor of Organization Behavior at UC Berkeley and is Dean of the
School of Public Health. Dr. Shortell is known as a leading academic
voice advocating reform of the nation’s health system.
Ben Wilson, Director, Healthcare IT, Intel Digital Health Group
Ben Wilson has over 20 years of healthcare experience. As the Director of Healthcare IT for Intel’s Digital Health Group, Mr. Wilson
is one of the architects of Intel’s Healthcare IT Value Model and
responsible for market development for the Intel Health Guide
worldwide. Mr. Wilson holds an MBA/MPH from UC Berkeley and a
Political Science degree from Stanford University.
David Ormerod, MD, Regional Medical Director, Blue Shield of California
Dr. Ormerod joined Blue Shield of California in July, 2002 as the Regional Medical Director in Northern California. Dr. Ormerod also
serves as the Medical Director for Blue Shield’s Labor, Public, and
Strategic Accounts Business Unit. Dr. Ormerod is a Family Practice
physician, board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice
since 1985. He completed his M.D. degree at Loma Linda University
in 1982 and his residency in Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente
Hospital in Fontana in 1985.
Chris Ohman, Senior Vice President, Health Plan Operations, Kaiser Permanente
Christopher Ohman is a Senior Vice President, Health Plan Operations, for Kaiser Permanente’s regions outside of California.
Before joining Kaiser, he served as president and CEO of the California
Association of Health Plans. Ohman also served as chief executive
and senior vice president, Commercial Business Unit, Blue Shield of
California. Prior to that position, Ohman was co-founder and CEO of Capmetrics, LLC. He holds a master’s degree in public affairs from
Princeton University, and a bachelor’s degree from Lewis and Clark College.
Doug Goodin, MD, Director, Multiple Sclerosis Center, UCSF Medical Center
Dr. Douglas Goodin is a neurologist and an internationally renowned expert in the treatment and research of multiple sclerosis. He earned
a B.S. in genetics and biochemistry at the University of Washington; an
M.S. in molecular biology at Purdue University; and a medical degree
from the UC Irvine. Goodin also is a professor of neurology at UCSF.
