Leonard D. Schaeffer
Founder and Former CEO
Wellpoint

Leonard D. Schaeffer was founding Chairman & CEO of WellPoint, the nation's largest health insurance company, from 1993 through 2004.  He continued to serve as Chairman of WellPoint through 2005.  In 1986, Mr. Schaeffer was recruited as CEO of WellPoint’s predecessor company, Blue Cross of California, where he managed its turnaround from near bankruptcy, founded WellPoint and completed 17 acquisitions.  He is currently Chairman of Surgical Care Affiliates and a Senior Advisor to TPG Capital, a private equity firm.  Previous business affiliations included President & CEO of Group Health, Inc., EVP & COO of the Student Loan Marketing Association, (Sallie Mae) and a Vice President of Citibank.

Mr. Schaeffer's public service appointments included Administrator of the federal Health Care Financing Administration (now CMS), Assistant Secretary for Management and Budget of the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Director of the Bureau of the Budget for the state of Illinois, Chairman of the Illinois Capital Development Board, and Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health.  Mr. Schaeffer also served on the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission.

Mr. Schaeffer is a graduate of Princeton University. He was the Regent’s Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley and is the Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California.  Mr. Schaeffer was a founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and former Chairman of the National Health Foundation.

Paul H. Keckley
Executive Director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions

Paul H. Keckley, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions (the Center), a part of Deloitte LLP (Deloitte). He provides strategic guidance on the development of Center research and thought leadership. Paul has had 30 years of experience in academic medicine and the private sector. He is well-regarded for his knowledge of health care economics, health policy and trend analysis.

Prior to joining Deloitte, Paul served in several key roles at Vanderbilt University. He was the executive director of the Vanderbilt Center for Evidence-based Medicine (VCEBM), associate professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and an associate professor of Health Management at the Owen Graduate School of Business. He oversaw many clinical outsourcing ventures involving care team training, clinical information technology, data management, and evidence-based pathway construction and integration. Paul also has engaged in several joint ventures, including specialty hospitals in the United Kingdom, development of primary care delivery systems in Botswana, partnerships with two Fortune 100 companies pursuing innovative approaches to chronic care management and others that are in early-stage development.

Paul supported efforts by the Vanderbilt Medical Group to develop, integrate and measure adherence to evidence-based pathways and order sets. He also was instrumental in spearheading Vanderbilt’s entry into integrative health, with the Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health.

Before joining Vanderbilt, Paul served as chairman of the board of a large California dental practice management company; chief executive officer (CEO) of an enterprise business management solutions firm; a developer of evidence-based guideline software; CEO of a community medical management firm and principal of The Keckley Group, a strategic planning consulting practice that served 1,200 U.S. provider organizations and health plans.

Paul  is an active member of several societies and editorial boards, and has authored numerous articles and three books. He has been profiled by ABC’s "20/20," CBS’s "60 Minutes," CNN, Fox News and The Wall Street Journal; he also has been a keynote speaker at several national industry meetings. Paul has testified for state Medicaid Review Committees in Utah and Tennessee about the potential impact of evidence-based standards on benefits for enrollees.

He received a bachelor of arts degree from Lipscomb University, a master's degree and a doctorate degree from Ohio State University, and he completed a fellowship in economic policy at Oxford University.

 
Marc E. Owen
Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Business Development
McKesson

Marc Owen, Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Business Development, joined McKesson in 2001. At McKesson he is responsible for overall corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and business development.  In addition, he is responsible for McKesson’s operations in Mexico and Asia Pacific.  Prior to joining McKesson, Owen was a senior partner at McKinsey, advising pharmaceutical manufacturers, healthcare providers, distributors and technology companies, including McKesson, for more than a decade. He was a founding partner responsible for establishing McKinsey's presence in Silicon Valley and a leader of McKinsey's Business Technology office globally. Owen was also chief executive officer of MindCrossing. Owen currently sits on the boards of Nadro, S.A. de C.V, Proventys, and MedVantx. Owen, who was born and raised in Wales, holds a law degree from Oxford University and an MBA from Stanford University.
